Kyoto Institute of Technology Department of Information Science

Program Overview

The Master's Program of Information Science aims to produce professionals who can apply computer technology, which is the essential element in all aspects of modern society, to the development of an advanced information society characterized by both material affluence and humane qualities. To that end, this program's education and research are designed to help students become well versed in the theory and practice of advanced technologies concerning information, communications, networks, and system control in a well-balanced manner and in terms of both hardware and software. By doing to, the program ensures that students obtain necessary skills for playing substantial roles in their fields of specialization as researchers and development engineers.

To achieve these objectives, this program's education and research focus on the following areas.

  • Computer system architecture essential for information processing; fundamental hardware and software technologies
  • Information transmission through various media; telecommunications and communication networks; and mobile communication technologies
  • Processing, recognition, and interaction technologies for images, speech, and various other types of signals and information
  • Multimedia database for the storage and utilization of various types of large amounts of information
  • Human interface that facilitates human-machine interaction
  • Interactive technologies based on psychology and cognitive science
  • Machine-learning and intelligent information processing systems designed to function like the human brain
  • System and control techniques for modeling, planning, designing, and controlling systems based on information obtained

In all these areas, education and research emphasize both the engineering aspect that involves practical techniques necessary for making actual products, and the scientific aspect that concerns information science underlying the engineering aspect.

This master's program offers classroom lectures and seminars designed to develop cutting-edge, practical skills in the above areas. Each laboratory provides students with opportunities to engage in advanced research activities under the supervision of several faculty members, thereby helping them obtain practical skills for identifying and solving problems. For working adult students, themed courses are also available.
